Our Ocular Health Examination includes the following tests in addition to the basic NHS sight test:

Goldmann pressure test -favoured by consultants
Eyecap Digital Fundus Photography
HRT II Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscope
Octopus 101 Visual Field Examination

Goldmann Pressure Test

Tonometry is the measurement of the pressure within the eye. It can be carried out using several different instruments, but in general the Goldmann tonometer is considered to be the most accurate method. We use this in preference to the 'puff of air test' as it is the preferred method by consultants in hospitals.
The pressure is measured to assess the risk of developing glaucoma, the higher the pressure, the greater the risk.

*Note, that the pressure within the eye is not the same as blood pressure.

Eyecap Digital Fundus Photography

The fundus is the inner back surface of the eye. By taking a digital image, small changes can be monitored over time more accuarately. This check is of particular importance to those people with diabetes or high blood pressure.

HRT II Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscope

The HRT II is one of the best glaucoma diagnostic instruments available today. It can pick up signs of this progressive disease earlier than any other method.
Glaucoma is a progressive disease and it is only after a few visits that a diagnosis may be made. Your optometrist will explain your results further to you.

Visual Field Examination

Visual field examination is an important part of an eye examination. It assesses how far around the eyes can see with the eyes pointing straight ahead. This test is particularly important in detecting glaucoma and monitoring the treatment of the disease.
Having a full visual field is also a legal requirement to drive.
